BIOGRAPHIE :
Née
dans une famille juive résidant à Brooklyn, elle débute sa carrière comme
mannequin en 1914, mais préfère définitivement les planches et se trouve un
emploi comme comédienne pour les Ziegfeld Follies entre 1916 et 1918.
Très
grande, blonde, possédant une voix de contralto un peu rauque, Tashman aura sa chance au cinéma à partir de 1921où on
pourra la voir dans un film muet, Experience. Elle
enchaîne plusieurs films du même genre avant de faire une transition réussie
vers le parlant. Tout au long de sa soixantaine de films, elle sera cantonnée
dans les rôles de soutien, obtenant souvent celui de la vipère de service ou
alors celui de « l’autre femme », toujours délaissée par l’acteur
principal pour l’héroïne du film. On la
verra donc chez Lubitsch (So
This is Paris, 1926), jouant dans Camille (1926) aux côtés de Norma Talmadge, s’essayant au western avec Will Rogers dans A Texas Steer
l’année suivante ou alors dans des films de Dorothy Arzner :
Manhattan Cocktail (1928) et Hardboiled (1929)
Les
années 30 la verront dans un rôle de meurtrière pour le mélodrame Murder by the Clock, jouant
la mère résignée dans The Road to Reno avant
de participer à des films comme The Wiser Sex, Those
We Love, un film sur la révolution russe, Scarlet Dawn, Mama Loves Papa avec Charlie Ruggles (1933) et dans la comédie musicale Too Much Harmony
(1933).
Sa
santé décline, atteinte d’un cancer qui devait l’emporter rapidement, sa mort
fera la une de tous les journaux. Ceux-ci furent ravis de rapporter son mariage
raté avec le comédien Al Lee puis avec l’acteur ouvertement gay, Edmund Lowe.
Elle-même lesbienne, les journaux à potins lui attribuèrent – à tort ou à
raison – de nombreuses liaisons avec des actrices en vogue du moment, Greta
Garbo notamment.
Ses
funérailles feront grand bruit et son dernier film, Frankie and Johnny sortira sur les écrans en 1936.
